Steamworks Brewing Co, in Durango had to change the name of its Sept. 23 Brewers Olympics to Brewers Olympixxx after the U.S. Olympic committee called and complained.

Apparently the committee doesn’t approve of such events as "Yeast Infection" (a balloon toss with spent yeast filled balloons - when they broke it was really messy); "Bung Bobbing" (like bobbing for apples); "Keg Relay" (rolling the kegs along a designed course); "Redneck Rodeo" (akin to a mechanical bull - riding a keg over a vat of beer and water); and "10oz Quick Draw" (or "chug" would be most appropriate... it required the consumption of a lot of beer).
Brian McEachron, director of marketing and sales and Steamworks co-founder, who dreamed up the event said it was a success.
"The weekend was a blast, he said. “It was like inviting both sides of your whole crazy family over and throwing a kegger. Things were bound to get interesting. We will laugh about the highlights for years."
According to Steamworks, the event will likely become a tradition.
In the end (and they earned it!), the Steamworks Bayfield team of David Boone and John Hiiva took the Golden Keg trophy.
Three Rivers took second while Durango Brewing and Carver's tied for third (Carver's was in last place until the "drink-off." Those guys chugged.)
Nine brewery teams competed including:
Carver Brewing Co., Durango
Ska Brewing Co., Durango
Durango Brewing Co., Durango
Three Rivers, Farmington, NM
Moab Brewing, Moab, UT
Smuggler's Brewing, Telluride
San Luis Valley Brewing
Steamworks Durango
Steamworks Bayfield
For the occasion, all the above donated beer, as well as Chama River, Bristol Brewing, New Belgium, Breckenridge, Flying Dog and Wynkoop. Proceeds from beer sales - plus the partial entry fees from a juried art show held simultaneously (called "Hair of the Dog") were donated to the La Plata County Humane Society - more than $1,500.
